District B13

This is one of those supercool badass movies you want to watch over and over again. Its got those cool dudes who jump from building to building, defying our belief. There's plenty of violence, plenty of action, and some hot chicks to boot. The script was crafted by Luc Besson, who brought us the supercool La Femme Nikita.

Its 2010, and the government of France has erected concrete barriers around the most dangerous ghettos of Paris, making them basically a prison. In District B13, the criminal element rules all. The drug lord Taha (Larbi Naceri) is the power. An undercover cop named Damien (Cyril Raffaelli) comes into the district to find and defuse a stolen nuclear weapon. Local punk Leito is looking for his kidnapped sister Lola. The two end up forming an alliance, and take on Taha.

This isn't really a great story, or a great script. But the action is unbelievable. Each scene outdoes the one that preceded it, and we look forward with great zeal to see our hero defy gravity when he jumps between buildings. There are some awesome fight scenes, featuring truly impressive martial arts. The main characters are played by stuntmen, so don't expect any fine acting. But they do what they're supposed to- they wow us.

Also, this isn't an original movie, either. It borrows and it borrows and it borrows. But I wasn't that bothered. I was too busy being entertained. And the movie is also political, since there have been specific problems with the youth of Paris lately.

The Blu-ray is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. The transfer is a hell of a lot better than I thought it would be. I guess I'm a France hater because I didn't think their budgets were high enough to deliver such a technically impressive film. Colors are beautiful, with blues and greens standing out especially. Black detail is spot-on. Audio is DTS HD Surround, and it is pretty damn good. Quite active, but not as overwhelming as the movie itself is.
