| | The Jewel of the Nile is the sequel to Romancing the Stone. Its basically the same movie, which is good because Romancing The Stone was a good one. There's trouble in paradise with the romance between Colton (Douglas) and Joan (Turner). She wants to settle down and he wants to continue traveling around the world, seeking adventure.
A wealthy Arab (Spiros Focas) invites Joan to travel to the Middle East. Jack bails out and chooses to sail around the Mediterranean instead. But of course there is a crisis. Joan is in danger because the wealthy Arab plans to overthrow a great spiritual leader of the region. She becomes an ally of the religious man and needs Jack's help to save her and the people of the area.
Danny Devito's role in the film is never truly defined. He's real funny in it, but he mostly just wanders around the desert, getting involved in comical events that are really not very integral to the plot. The spiritual leader is played by Avner Eisenberg, and he's truly excellent.
Robert Zemeckis neglected to direct this feature, leaving the job instead to Lewis Teague. While its still an entertaining picture, it lacks a lot of the punch of the original. The action sequences aren't quite as exiting as in Romancing The Stone. But all the actors make up for any negatives. Their performances are always funny and always believable, even when the situation they are in is insanely unbelievable.
The color palette has been spruced up considerably. Black detail is also near excellent, something you will especially notice in the scene Kaffee chases JoAnne in the rain. Grain and dirt have been minimized to a point where it is in no way intrusive. The film is a bit lacking in overall three dimensionality however, and at times seems a bit too soft for high def.
Audio is PCM 5.1 surround, and it is what it is. The mix doesn't always seem to be in the least bit immersive, but it kicks in during the high tension scenes. It seems principally front heavy during so much of the duration. Also, the bass is often lacking in scenes I was hoping for more power. |
