| | This is a great movie. One of my favorites. I've probably seen it fifty times, and that's not including the 24 hour TBS marathon on Christmas. You've probably seen it as well. In my opinion, not seeing this movie is like spitting on the flag. And who wants to be spitting on the flag at Christmas time?
This is the story of Ralphie, a ten year old growing up in 1940's Indiana, and his epic quest for the perfect Christmas gift. The object of his obsession is an authentic Red Ryder BB gun. When bringing up his wish to his parents, he is horribly shot down by his mother with "you'll shoot your eye out". He decides to go over his mother's head when he has to write a paper about what he wants for Christmas for school. His teacher shoots him down, with the same reply. He then decides to go over everyone's head and ask directly from Santa. Same response.
The movie is filled with childhood experiences that have absolute universal appeal. When Ralphie is punished for cursing, his mother asked him from who he heard the f-word. The narration in that scene is brilliant. "Now, I had heard that word at least ten times a day from my old man. He worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay. It was his true medium; a master". Just like my dad! When he's punished, he imagines the ultimate revenge on his parents: he returns years later, and has gone blind because of soap poisoning. His parents are stricken with grief and sorrow. Its hilarious.
Every detail of A Christmas Story is realistic. No matter who you are or where you're from, there is no way you can't relate to Ralphie. That's why this movie is so loved. Its probably the finest Christmas movie ever made, possibly even squeaking by Its A Wonderful Life.
The Blu-ray is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. The visual presentation of A Christmas Story was always a bit hazy, seemingly like a dream, or more importantly, a memory. And it's a low budget picture that isn't all that visually aggressive. But I think its been spruced up nicely. Colors are much stronger and blacks are detailed. Overall detail is quite good. Audio is Dolby Digital Plus 1.0 mono, and its an uninspiring mix. |
