| | Oftentimes, if only to register shock on my father’s face, I like to point out that I’m not actually too big a fan of James Bond. I like to point out that I’m of the opinion that John Shaft could wipe the floor with James Bond anyday. Though I was pleasantly surprised with Casino Royale, the twenty or so Bond films don’t really transfer too well nowadays.
However, Sean Connery did do something special with the role. He embodied the cool of that persona like no one else. And Thunderball is probably the best of the bunch, at least from those that came out in the 60’s.
James Bond continues on his fourth mission, with his aim to recover two stolen warheads. They have been taken by the evil SPECTRE organization. The world is held hostage and Bond heads to Nassau. Here, he meets the beautiful Domino and is forced into a thrilling confrontation with SPECTRE agent Emilio Largo
Domino is perhaps the finest Bond girl ever to grace the screen. Unfortunately, since James is killed by the villain, he doesn’t get the girl and the film ends on a very sad note. Actually, that’s not what happens at all.
This is a real good transfer. The Blu-ray is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. There are of course a lot of imperfections and some blemishes on the picture, but considering the age of the source material I think the technicians did the best they can. The colors are good and the detail pretty strong. I've seen this movie many times, but this time I saw a lot more in the picture than I had before- background details that had been pretty faded on versions I had seen before. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and it is a pretty nice achievement. |
