Can I even discuss this? Southland Tales? Richard Kelly? The Rock? Who cares? Barack Obama won. Sarah Palin has to go back to Alaska! Who would have conceived this possibility? Half a century ago, a black man couldn’t vote in many parts of this country. Now, a black man will be leading this country. Every attack they launched against him, every repetition proved fruitless. William Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, none of it mattered. Because what they didn’t realize is that when the country needs fixin’, none of that shit matters.
Watching John McCain’s very classy acceptance speech, I was struck. Where was this man during the campaign? Here was a gracious and kind straight shooter who was accepting his fate and telling his followers to move on, and to not blame themselves. That’s the John McCain every one grew to love over these past years, but the damn right wing of the party muzzled him. I know there will be blame flying around in Republican circles, but McCain pointed out that the buck stopped with him. Its called class, Rush Limbaugh. Eat it. Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Boxer Santaros is an action star who's stricken with amnesia. His life intertwines with Krysta Now, an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and Ronald Taverner, a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.
The Blu-ray is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. Its a bit hard to assess the visual quality of this disc because its so all over the place. I suppose its good, although its full of grain (intentional) and washed out colors. Certain scenes look clearly better than other scenes. Colors are always strong, even when they aren't (understand?). Blacks are very good, as well. Audio is DTS HD 5.1 Surround, and its pretty impressive. The movie never lets up, and neither does the soundtrack. Surrounds are non-stop, and bass is deep. Dialogue is clear.
