| | Its back. Disney has finally re-released the never re-releasable Sleeping Beauty. Now its no high definition Blu-ray. The classic two dimensional cartoon! Now in high definition! Actually, it really is cool to see an old timey cartoon in this format.
Sleeping Beauty tells the story of a king and queen whose baby is cursed by a malevolent witch with the promise that before the child's 16th birthday she'll prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die! The bad lady (Eleanor Audrey), one of the most magnificent of the Disney villains, is a sorceress with spiral-horned headgear and flowing black gown who can vanish into thin air, transform herself into fire or a fire-breathing dragon, and send minions scurrying with jolts of lightning from her staff. She both frightened and captivated children when the film first showed in 1959, and she's likely to do the same for another generation.
I do miss two dimensional cartoons. Raised on the likes of Lion King, I haven’t yet grown accustomed to the computer generated imagery that these kids nowadays are so used to. These youngsters don’t even like the regular old cartoons. Damn kids.
However, this is a visually interesting film, truthfully. What you will notice is the colors. So much bolder and beautiful than I ever have remembered. And even though it’s a two dimensional cartoon, its visually immersive.
Audio is Dolby Digital, and you can tell the technicians have been working their asses off on it. Bass is deep and dialogue is crisp and clear. |
