JFK

Oliver Stone’s JFK was a landmark in filmmaking. As far as editing for suspense, its almost unmatched. Stone is a truly excellent filmmaker with skill unmatched by most. JFK is excellent, edge-of-your-seat entertainment. But as for as historical accuracy goes, its one of the greatest travesties in the history of film.

The story of Jim Garrison, the pioneering rebel from New Orleans who dared to take on the establishment and bring charges against someone for the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Because anybody who’s not a total idiot knows it wasn’t just a lone gunman, right? Not so fast. I’m reminded of Norman Mailer, who wrote a book on Oswald, and in a recent PBS documentary lamented that he couldn’t find evidence of a conspiracy. He wanted it to be true, he sincerely did. But it just wasn’t there.

So what would you do when faced with this overwhelming evidence of Oswald’s guilt. Well, you’d do what Oliver Stone did, what Jim Garrison did- you’ll make up facts all over the place to link supposed actors in a conspiracy who would never of had any relation otherwise.

I suggest you rent Oswald’s Ghost, or watch the Zappruder film for yourself, or do some research, then you’ll see where the evidence lies. But I will say that JFK is an incredible film and Oliver Stone gives me an erection.
The Blu-ray is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. I enjoy seeing smaller films such as this get the high-def treatment. This may not be the Matrix or Pirates of the Caribbean, but the improved video quality is quite evident. Of course, colors are quite strong. In comparison to the DVD, this disc is obviously much more pleasing. There are no dropouts or blemishes and minimal grain. Overall detail is excellent, with both closeups and mid range shots looking perfect. The three dimensionality of the image is surprisingly good, offering an immersive feel that really isn't necessary for a fun little comedy such as this.

Audio is Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 Surround, and its much what you would expect. This isn't the most aggressive mix, but what we do get is top-notch. Dialogue, the main driving force of the film, is always clear and audible.
