Event Horizon

Event Horizon is one of those 90’s gems that’s always fun to watch and extra terrifying when you’re stoned. I only know that from a long time ago, not recently. Science fiction is fun to watch, but it’s too difficult to find decent ones to watch. Sam Neil is an outstanding villain. And Laurence Fishburne is always fun to watch.

The year is 2047. A rescue mission has been dispatched to the vicinity of Neptune, where seven years earlier a deep space research vessel named Event Horizon disappeared. As the rescue ship Lewis and Clark approaches, its sensors indicate the temperature on board the other ship is very cold. No human life signs are detected. Yet there are signs of life all through the ship--some other form of life.

This may seem like a cheap Alien ripoff, but that would be unfair. It’s a mood driven noir-ish horror film that just happens to be set on a spaceship. It reminds me of Dark City (but its not as good, don’t get me wrong). I’m sorry I ruined the surprise that Sam Neil, but I didn’t realize and its too late for the backspace button.

The Blu-ray is presented in 2.40:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. A big step up from the prior DVD transfer. The image here is cleaner, crisper, and a heck of a lot more sharp. Detail is greatly improved. Colors are great, the print is clean and the compression is pretty much issue free.

Audio is Uncompressed PCM 5.1 surround (48 KHz/ 24-bit). Dialogue is never garbled and bass is strong. Surrounds are active throughout, even though I wish they weren’t. Throw this movie in the trash can.
