| Reviewed by: Jason White 29 Jun 2006 NYPD Blue: Season Four
| | Fox moves forwards with NYPD Blue on DVD with the release of Season 4. Season 4 continues the trends established before, very similar audio and video and extras. No widescreen which seems odd, but well with season 4, you should already be past that by now. NYPD Blue is a well done show, and with David Milch of Deadwood fame in control, season 4 was well in stride for some memorable times.
Season 4 introduces some new characters while keeping new stuff going in terms of relationships from Bobby Simone (Jimmy Smits) and Diane Russell (Kim Delaney). Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) continues his growth as a hard edged character with a lot of emotion and issues hidden just below the surface.
Episode breakdown:
1. Moby Greg
2. Thick Stu
3. Yes, We Have No Cannolis
4. Where's Swaldo?
5. Where'd the Van Gogh?
6. Yes Sir, That's My Baby
7. Ted and Carey's Bogus Adventure
8. Unembraceable You
9. Caulksmanship
10. My Wild Irish Rose
11. Alice Doesn't Fit Here Anymore
12. Upstairs, Downstairs
13. Tom and Geri
14. A Remington Original
15. Taillight's Last Gleaming
16. What a Dump!
17. A Wrenching Experience
18. I Love Lucy
19. Bad Rap
20. Emission Impossible
21. Is Paris Burning?
22. A Draining Experience
Season 4 on DVD includes 22 episodes presented in 1.33:1 full frame. For nearly 10-year-old stuff, the video looks nice. Clear, crisp and pretty issue free.
Audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. Dialogue is clear, but the music is a tad loud with the bass at times, sort of blocking a bit of dialogue. Small issue though. Overall a good mix for each episode.
Extras include two featurettes. In the New runs nearly 17 minutes and is made up of interviews that deal with repeating characters that appeared during the season. Through the Lens: The Look of Blue runs 23 minutes and has more on hand stuff, behind the scenes and the work that went on to get the show made.
Also present is some audio commentaries for three of the includes episodes.
Season 4 falls into much of the same category as the earlier season releases. Similar audio and video and extras. So if you have been happy with what prior results have yielded, expect the same with season 4. Fox does great TV shows on DVD and NYPD Blue is no different.
