| | It must be very strange to know Tim Burton. He seems like quite an odd fella, and his choice in projects reflects his strangeness. Sweeney Todd is a damn opera about a serial killer who feeds people to other people. If anyone could make it work, it would be Tim Burton. And while Sweeney Todd isn't quite the movie it could have been, its entertaining enough.
Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) is the Jack the Ripper of barbers. After he is wronged by the vile Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who had Sweeney deported so he could steal his wife, the haircutter returns. He discovers that his wife is dead and his teenage daughter, Johanna (Jayne Wisener), belongs to the judge.. Sweeney makes it a priority to visit his revenge upon Turpin and his assistant, Beadly Bamford (Timothy Spall).
He employs the aid of Mrs. Lovett (Helena Bonham Carter), who runs a disused pub under Sweeney's old barber shop. Soon, the haircutter is again open for business but those who enter seem not to emerge. Sweeney has opened a trap door in the bottom of his shop and, when he's done with customers, they are placed into Mrs. Lovett's grinder so they can become the ingredients of her meat pies.
Johnny Depp's performance is truly something to behold, as are all his performances. He is not a trained singer, yet he belts out nearly every single line of dialogue with the confidence of a seasoned performer. Helena Bonham Carter is intriguing as ever as Mrs. Lovett. She can belt out quite a tune as well.
Sweeney Todd may be a bit too intense for a lot of folks. It treats murder with a dark humor that is definitely meant to, and truly does disturb. However, its so original and interesting and unlike anything you've seen on the screen in years, that you owe it to yourself to check it out. |
