Rawhide: The Third Season (Volume One)

Some five decades ago, we were first given a real introduction to the man that would be a legend, Clint Eastwood. Rawhide was the show and the western still holds up today for a good deal of fun. Paramount brings to DVD the first season in a nice set that offers up pleasing audio and video. The extras are light, too light really, but don’t let that dissuade you from a fine box set release.

Way back in 1959, Rawhide made its debut and ran for 8 seasons. The western themed show combined romance, mystery, suspense and a good deal of action. Gil Flavor (Eric Fleming) is a trail boss moving a herd from Texas up north, with a crew of cowboys in tow. His main man is Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood) who is guy who can get stuff down when push comes to shove. Along the way they deal with Indians, rough terrain, weather, and bad guys out to steal their money or the herd. On the lighter side they have romance, meet new friends and just work to get their job done.

Episodes:
1. Incident of the Day of the Dead
2. Incident at Dangerfield Dip
3. Incident of the Shambling Man
4. Incident at Jacob's Well
5. Incident of the Thirteenth Man
6. Incident at the Buffalo Smokehouse
7. Incident of the Haunted Hills
8. Incident of the Stalking Death
9. Incident of the Valley in Shadow
10. Incident of the Blue Fire
11. Incident at Spanish Rock
12. Incident of the Druid's Curse
13. Incident at Red River Station
14. Incident of the Devil and His Due
15. Incident of the Wanted Painter
16. Incident at Tinker's Dam

Dolby mono audio for the episodes. Limitations of the day and age are evident, as a lot of flat and tinny at times. That said dialogue is very clear and really the limitations don’t detract from the fun really too much. Score sounds rich given what it is, and well it has very little distortion or issues. Not bad at all.
