| | Owen Wilson is a very talented comedic actor and writer, even if he doesn't always choose the most interesting projects to work on. We were all sad to see what happened to him last year, and its good to see him back on his feet. However, Drillbit Taylor does fall into the category of unfortunate choices on the part of Mr. Wilson. That is quite unfortunate still, since the script was co-written by the hilarious Seth Rogen.
Adolescence is a difficult time, as we all know. According to Hollywood, you're either a bully, or you're a victim. One of the reasons nerds remain victims is because they don't stand up for themselves. They don't have the confidence to stare the bully down in the scoolyard. That's where Drillbit Taylor comes in. Wilson plays the ex-soldier turned personal bodyguard for hire. The bullied kids enlist his help.
The three kids are Wade (Nate Harley), Ryan (Troy Gentile) and Emmitt (David Dorman). They just began high school and have already come under the wrath of the most vicious senior in the school, Filkins (Alex Frost), who is unrelenting in his torture of the trio. They enlist Drillbit Taylor because he's cheap. He's actually a con man with no real bodyguard credentials.
The movie never really seems to take off comedically. There are a few decent laughs, but the PG-13 rating severely restricts the Apatowosity from taking full effect. Steven Brill does a mildly proficient job directing, but it doesn't seem like anybody was given a lot to work with. The child actors aren't too special either. Owen Wilson is talented and trying to do his best with what he's given, to no avail. |
