Criminal Minds: The Third Season

Now starring Joe Mantegna and that guy from Dharma & Greg, Criminal Minds is another CSI-esque crime series from CBS. But despite its usual cornball nature, I actually enjoy this one. Or I did, when I was an idiot. This is absolutely awful Instead of focusing on the hair follacles and DNA samples left at the scene, this show focuses on the nature of serial killers and the motivations behind their actions.

Thomas Gibson backs up Joe Mantegna as Agent Hotchner, his second in command. Probably the best performance of the show is given by Matthew Gubler as Dr. Spencer Reid, a child prodigy whose intelligence dwarfs that of those he works with. However, Gubler plays him with a childlike insecurity and innocence that makes the character truly three dimensional. Or would if the show weren't so awful

The plot of each episode is pretty basic. We usually witness some sort of kidnapping or murder during the first sequence, then we are directed to the FBI headquarters where the profilers are handed the case. Now I personally don't believe that the show could possibly portray profilers realistically. These guys are pretty much never wrong, and just by going over a few basic and established principles about the way criminals act and think. But its only a television show so therefore that complaint is really not that valid.

The dvds are presented in 1.78:1 widescreen. The picture quality is quite good, although it features a bit of a dull and grey visual design indicative of CBS dramas. Colors are strong and black detail is above average. Audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and its a pretty active and enveloping mix, only front heavy on occasion.
