| | The phenomenon of CSI. Its crazy. When I was taking paralegal classes at the local community college, most of the people in the class were taking law as a prerequisite for a criminal justice degree. Now why would they want a degree in criminal justice? Ask any of them and you'll always get the same answer. CSI.
Jerry Bruckheimer is a freaking magician. He can take any idea, any concept, and make it take off like an insane rocket ship in the Nielsens. The show features nearly unknown actors performing impossible tasks that real police would never do. It stars William Peterson (Manhunter) and Marg Helgenberger (Species) as Las Vegas Police Department detectives who solve murders with barely any effort at all. Who needs good old fashioned police work when you have all sorts of crazy gadgets to solve the crime for you? Since when do the best and brightest scientists in the country work for various police departments, making bum paychecks?
Criticism aside, the effect of this series on all of television certainly can not be overlooked. It takes Law and Order to the cleaners in the ratings (which is a shame, because I feel Law and Order is a better show). William Peterson is of course very cool in his portrayal of Gill Grissom, and Helgenberger exudes sexuality in every frame of the show. She's pretty hot for an older chick.

The box set is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen. The picture quality is quite good, although I feel that CSI has always been a bit grey and soft in picture quality, so you aren't going to see as much detail as you would think. The blacks are pretty strong though, and colors are distinct, even if they are a bit dull. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and its impressive enough for a television show. TV shows mostly feature front-heavy mixes, but this one is quite active. |
