| | Mission Impossible was a bit before my time. My first introduction into the series was DePalma's film version, a movie I love. I saw it with my parents when I was 11 years old. I remember their absolute horror and disdain when the entire team is killed off in the first 20 minutes. They were angry, proclaiming that the show had always been about the team effort, and that the numerous characters were integral to the stories. I now understand their concerns, though I still feel the movie version is superior to the show.
Cool is the best way to describe this series. Its so quintessentially 60's in such a great way. Of course, that means its pretty dated, but that's not a detraction. If I was alive during that time period I'm sure I would feel a deep sense of nostalgia.
The IMF team was responsible for taking on the Soviet threat around the world. Spying on the soviets always has seemed so much cooler than our current enemy. Would agents rather be undercover diplomats in Moscow, with thousand dollar suits, or would they rather be undercover as a jihadist, dwelling in a Pakistani cave? So many cool gadgets and interesting ideas were exemplified in this series, and the actors did some outstanding work as well.

The dvds are presented in their original full screen format, and they look killer (at least compared to 1966). This is definitely the kind of show that deserves this kind of treatment. Grain has been greatly reduced, blacks are stronger, and overall colors are much punchier. Audio is Dolby Digital Mono, and there's not really much that can't be said of it. Its not bad- the dialogue is clear enough and the music sounds fine, it just doesn't offer any wow. |
