| | In the recent tradition of slash and slash some more mindless horror movies, The Strangers arrives on dvd and Blu-ray with an unrated edition. This phenomenon has been seen since the “unrated” version of American Pie. It seems the studio purposely films a couple of scenes they know can’t make the cut, sometimes even not submitting them. That way, they can release a new unrated edition, even if it varies very little. This isn’t any different, in any substantive sense, from the version we saw before.
Starring Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman, this is the story of a young couple under siege. After returning from a wedding reception, a they couple staying in an isolated vacation house receive a knock on the door in the mid-hours of the night. What ensues is a violent invasion by three strangers, their faces hidden behind masks. The couple find themselves in a violent struggle, in which they go beyond what either of them thought capable in order to survive. Throughout this horrifying ordeal, I was thinking about my laundry. Should I go down there and do it? Couldn’t there be a bum in there, waiting to kill me, just like in this movie.
The Strangers (there are three of them) wear masks. They are simple masks but, as we know from the lesson taught by Michael Myers, even a blank white covering of the face can be terrifying in certain circumstances. The director gets a lot of mileage out of these masks. The first few times we see them, they generate far more shock than a human face, no matter how disfigured, could. After a while, however, the effect wears off. Maybe that's why, before the movie comes to its conclusion, the masks have been removed. But its much less than satisfying when we finally see their faces. |
