| | A couple of months ago if you would have asked me if I would play a table tennis game on my 360(or buy one for that matter) I would have laughed in your face. Table tennis are you kidding me? YES. ROCKSTAR TABLE TENNIS and NO I am NOT kidding you this game is GOOD!
In this new day and age of games when we are looking forward to the next BIG THING (GEARS OF WAR) its nice to take a step back and see just how good a simple idea can be.
Enter ROCKSTAR table tennis. The developers seemed to have used the majority of their time focusing in on the game play. You might as well call it time and money very well spent. This game is a blast offline and online. It isn’t flashy and there is no gimmick to be found anywhere in this title. There aren’t a lot of options and the single player mode offline does leave something to be desired. On the other hand the graphics are very nicely done with wonderful cloth physics a la NBA 2K6 and the crowd does get into the game from time to time.
The player models are great and the ball even sounds different when you play on the various tables (nice touch). After I completed a couple of the tutorials and a couple of offline tournaments I was ready to try my hand at the online mode with some friends from MN. The games online are fast paced have no lag and make this game worth 40 bucks in its own right. If you think this game is TOP SPIN or VIRTUAL TENNIS you're wrong. It's like both of those games on steroids. After you get the hang of the controls you will also notice that each player has this bar at the top of the screen called the FOCUS meter.
Every time you can charge a shot the focus meter goes up a bit until it over flows. When it over flows your character basically gets a boost of adrenaline this small feature adds a little more depth and excitement to the game. That meter is what really takes the game to another level. When two people get in the zone at the same time memories of FORREST GUMP will come to mind, when you see it for yourself you will know what I am talking about. The controls are simple and once you have completed the mini games in the tutorial mode you will be hitting those backspins, counter spins, soft shots and smashes like you where born with ping pong paddles instead of hands.
You can choose between 11 different players all with different ratings and styles. Most of the characters are locked though and you will need to play through the single player game to unlock everyone. After you have played with more than one person it’s easy to see that all 11 players in the game are different and have their own styles of play. Jesper hits like a hammer and Kumi puts monster spin on the ball. Its takes a while to find the right character to use, but there is enough diversity here for everyone’s style of play.
For 40 bucks it's one of the best games to grace the Xbox 360 console thus far. This game is a must buy period; I can’t say it any other way. Table tennis isn’t perfect though. I do wish there was downloadable content and a create-a-character career mode, but once you play online you will see the value in this purchase. I wanted to keep this review short, simple, and to the point because that’s what this game is all about. It’s very addictive, deep, and a blast to play online. Add in spectator mode for tournaments and you've got yourself a winner.
