Spiderman 3 (Playstation 3)

"Merchandising! Merchandising!"

The words of the wise and powerful Yogurt have never been so prophetic. With a multi-billion dollar franchise comes merchandising. You can't blame Sony. I'd do the same thing. And it doesn't hurt that they have such an innovative and revolutionary game to boot. But that doesn't necessarily mean its non-stop fun.

When I played Spiderman 2 for XBox I was blown away. The scope of that game was incredible. Every square inch of Manhattan was there. You could go anywhere and do anything. You could even climb to the top of The Empire State Building and plummet to your death, all the while screaming about your lost love. But it seems that the game designers put all their eggs in one basket. Its an amazingly interactive world, but the gameplay and missions are usually uninteresting. After you chase some escaping bank robbers in their getaway car for the hundredth time you'll get what I'm saying. Alas, Spiderman 3 suffers from the same negative.

The original 2 Spiderman games grossed 462 million in sales. Seriously. Damn, that's a lot. Anyway, who can blame Activision for coming back with it. The graphics are above and beyond the previous games, and it looks great on the PlayStation 3. But I was surprised at a couple of the cut scenes. They often looked stilted and crappy, with the characters not looking at one another. But, these complaints aside, the graphics and the gameplay look amazing.

But I come back to my complaint. This game just gets a bit boring. I always had the same issue with Grand Theft Auto. After the umpteenth driving mission, you just start to tire. But maybe its just me. I also tend to suck at video games, and have to play each level a million damn times just to advance. Maybe that's the problem.

But, I would recommend this game. It can be fun, and if you have skills with a controller, you may have a lot more fun than I did.

Three out of Four stars.
