| | The biggest problem with this movie, besides the fact that its recycled romantic comedy crap, is how hungry it makes you. Food is a big character in it. However, if you were to watch this in a movie theater, all you would have is some greasy popcorn. And the whole time they're cooking this amazing food that makes you pine for sustenance. Also, don't smoke weed before watching this movie. But, since its now on Blu-ray and dvd, I suppose you can cook something up before watching it. But definitely make a tasty meal. Throw in a whole bunch of spices. Damn, I'm hungry.
This is a remake. That's not to say that Hollywood doesn't have an original bone in its decrepit body. Wait, yes it is. There's some German movie that came out in 2001 called Mostly Martha. Maybe its better, but I have absolutely no desire to see it, especially after watching this version.
Catherine Zeta-Jones plays Kate, the head chef at the trendy 22 Bleecker Street Restaurant in Manhattan. She's a master cook who intimidates the competition. She's married to her work, blah blah blah. Career girl. No time for anyone else. You know the drill. Then, Kate's sister is killed in a car accident and she inherits her daughter Zoe (Abigail Breslin). Well, this causes some problems.
With all she has to deal with, Kate hires a new chef to join the staff. Nick (Aaron Eckhart) is a master chef in his own right. He doesn't take no guff. But he falls for Kate, yada yada yada. A man is the last thing she's looking for. No time for love. Tried and true Hollywood formula.
You've seen this movie before. Its been reincarnated a million times, and its always the same result. Occasionally, its mildly entertaining, but its mostly just tired. Definitely not recommended.
The HD-DVD is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p. The source is pretty much perfect, and I noticed absolutely no issues with the video quality. Contrast is excellent, and it adds to a truly three dimensional look with excellent depth and detail. Colors are strong without being overwhelming or unrealistic. There is no overwhelming grain or noise on the frame, and no blemishes or scratches or anything negative to speak of.
Audio is Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround, and its subdued but excellent. This isn't an action film, but the mix seems to find plenty for the surrounds to do. The rears kick in often during the very dramatic scenes, and depth and clarity is very good, especially with the dialogue. |
