| | I saw Twister at the theater on my eleventh birthday. What a glorious time it was. Maybe this will make some of my readers feel old. Maybe not, since I don't have any readers. Anyway, I get paid to write these whether anyone reads them or not. So, shambalaya hey hey shambalaya ho to fo ta te da.
Twister is vintage 90's. You see children, for a short period of time there was an American obsession with tornadoes. There were dozens of Discovery Channel specials about stormchasers and the crazy lives they lead combing the plains for cyclones. Twister started all that. Twister rocks.
Jan De Bont doesn't make good movies anymore. In fact, he only made one good movie before this one (Speed). Its a shame, but he's another product of the 90's. He can't survive in another environment. Its too complicated and scary. But he really came with it on Twister. Its just about the most fun you can have in a movie.
Bill Paxton is Bill Harding, a meteorologist with a wild past. That wild past includes chasing around tornadoes with his ex-wife Jo (Helen Hunt). Those days are over, though. He has a new lady, a very square and delicate soul who doesn't really know about Bill's past. They head out to see Jo to get her to sign the divorce papers. But Jo has a surprise. There's some tornadoes to hunt, and they're F-5's. Is Bill gonna get sucked into the madness? Hell Yeah! Are we going to enjoy the ride? Hell Yeah.
The Blu-ray is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen. The movie is about ten years old, so its impressive that the transfer looks so good. There is still some grain and a few blemishes evident, but they have been minimized. Colors are quite strong, with blacks being especially detailed.
Audio is DTS HD 5.1 Lossless, and its also impressive. The mix is very active and strong. Bass is deep, and the music sounds incredible. Dialogue is never garbled. was pleasantly surprised to hear very active surrounds, and deep bass. Dialogue is well prioritized, sound effects are immersive. |
