Shall We Dance?

I dislocated my patella last night. That's a fancy medical word for kneecap. I was walking to the toilet and I slipped on some water. My legs spread apart, and when I looked down my kneecap was all the way over on the right side of my leg. An ambulance had to come. The doctor had to pop it back into place. I'm in a cast thing now. It was ridiculously painful. But it doesn't even come close to the pain I endured watching this movie. Shall We Dance is evil and should be avoided like the plague.

Not only is this such an outstanding film, it just happens to be a remake of an equally outstanding Spanish film that's also about dancing, which is a very important issue to cover in a film. We have Richard Gere sans gerbil, along with Susan Sarandon and Jennifer Lopez, and Nick Cannon to boot. Don't you just want to die? I don't mean to be so harsh.

John Clark (Richard Gere) is a man with a wonderful job, a charming wife and a loving family, who nevertheless feels that something is missing as he makes his way every day through the city. John sees a beautiful woman, staring with a lost expression through the window of a dance studio. Haunted, John impulsively jumps off the train one night, and signs up for dance lessons, hoping to meet her. A bunch of crazy situations follow. Who is this temptress? Who is Paulina? She's something else, right? The acting chops of J-Lo will let you know.

Also, today I read Susan Sarandon say that she'll move to Italy or Canada if John McCain is elected. Full disclosure: I am a liberal. But let me say this Ms. Sarandon. Good riddance to you and everything you and your uninformed ilk stand for. You think we're going to miss you? You think anybody gives a shit? No. And you're not going to do it. George Bush has been in office for eight years. Do you honestly think McCain is worse? Why don't you go burn a flag and shut the fuck up.

But don’t worry- the audio and video quality is excellent. Therefore, the movie is good. That’s what I’m supposed to say, right? Presented in 2.35:1 widescreen and encoded at 1080p, the Blu-ray is quite the transfer. The source material is recent and I didn’t expect many problems, and there aren't many. There is some film grain, but it is not obtrusive and seems to fit well with the mood of the film. Colors are distinct and vibrant, and blacks are incredible.

Audio is PCM surround, and we also have a Dolby Digital mix. This is how crap should sound- beautiful. Surrounds are active when its needed. Bass is deep and dialogue is crisp and clear.
