| Reviewed by: Jason White 27 Oct 2004 Texhnolyze: Volume 3
| | Anime, anime, anime. I guess I am super biased, but for whatever reason, anime tends to let me down a heck of a lot less than real life films and TV programs. Yes a lot of anime nowadays covers the same ground over and over, but well given the beauty of the art, even repeat subjects and stories are great to see in a new show that is illustrated wonderfully. Texhnolyze is a show that has a few familiar touches but really goes about in a different way and has a pretty unique look while doing it. I have previously reviewed volumes 1 and 2 and lost hope of getting volume 3, but surprisingly it showed up about a month after release so I can continue to enjoy the show instead of having to wait to when I can afford to purchase the myriad of anime titles I want but have no cash for. Sadly reviewing all this fun stuff doesn’t make me a rich man. Who knew? Yeah right.
Texhnolyze has been a somewhat confusing and nicely intricate story. With volume 3 a lot of the mystery is starting to come into focus with details and gabs getting filled in. Nothing is cut and dry though so the answers, or hints at them, come in odd fashion but that is part of the charm of the show. Volume 3 covers more of the mafia stuff, but more the repercussions of some of the events in volume 2. Nice to see that sort of side to the story as it makes it a better story in the long run.
Texhnolyze is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Being a recent show it looks great, just as with volumes 1 and 2. Lots of detail to go with a sharp image. Backgrounds really stand out. Darker segments hold up very well with rich coloring and great shadow detail. Texhnolyze is a great looking show and Geneon’s DVD treatment of it is something special.
As with the previous volumes, volume 3 gets English and Japanese 2.0 soundtracks. As noted before, the English voice work is good but the Japanese just seems like a better fit in all areas. Audio has good range for 2.0 with nice separation and balance. Everything is clear and dynamic and seems to make good use of the environments to keep the action realistic and natural.
Extras consist of a textless closing, some outtakes (from the dub actors), and a few trailers for some other Geneon programs.
Texhnolyze continues to be a rather intriguing show. I am glad that I got sent a copy a good month after its release. Of the few shows I was into and had been getting all the volumes, Texhnolyze was probably at the top right next to Last Exile (don’t get me started on not getting the rest of those). Glad to have volume 3 and hoping to get more volumes as they come out. |
