3rd Rock From the Sun Season Two

Anchor Bay continues spreading out into a few new TV areas with some more show season box sets. Their latest releases include Season 2 of 3rd Rock from the Sun plus Tripping the Rift. 3rd Rock gets reviewed here.

The episodes come in 1.33:1 full frame. Quality is okay but compression artifacts and ghosting are severe issues here. Also there is some nasty enhancement that adds more artifacts. Colors are fine, natural and mostly issue free. Same for the print used. So overall not bad, but the compression job leaves a bit to be desired.

Audio is Dolby Stereo. Dialogue is clear, music is fine, and the laugh track is annoyingly loud. I hate the laugh track on all such releases. When you have to examine a show like this technically, already being taken out of the going-ons a bit, a laugh track is like torture.

Extras include an interview with John Lithgow, a season 2 highlight reel, a blooper reel, plus extras focusing in on the 3-D episodes. These include an alternate ending, behind the scenes look into how it gets done, plus some 3-D bloopers.

Last up you get some TV spots, another nice booklet, and some 3-D glasses.

Season 2 certainly was a good deal funnier than season 1. For that well recommended if a fan. As for the DVD set, it is of similar note to the first season in many regards, both good and bad. A plus is you can find this box set a lot of places online for well below retail cost.
