Producers, The (2005)

Mel Brooks 1968 film The Producers inspired a Broadway play of the same name, that went on to garner big audiences and lots of praise. The play features Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, and well given that success, not to surprising that the two decided to get together and recreate it for a new feature film. I never saw the Broadway show, and never will, but the film here, well it had some good energy from the actors involved, seemed fine, but to me, lacked something that the Brooks film had. The film still entertains just fine so if a fan you should probably give it a go.

Lane stars as Max Bialystock, a one time legend of Broadway shows who hasn’t hat a hit show in what seems like forever. Accountant Leo Bloom pitches him an idea, and with this idea, despite the production being the biggest disaster of all time, it would still rack up a tidy sum for all involved. Together the two come up with a sure flop, Springtime for Hitler, a musical from a neo-Nazi (Will Ferrell). Supposed to be the biggest flop of all time, it actually becomes a success, which is bad news, as that throws the money making plan in a spin.

The DVD features a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. Image quality is quite nice with a sharp and defined image that remains consistent. Some light enhancement pops up, but beyond that, this one is clear and clean. Solid blacks, great hues and colors that pop.

Audio is Dolby Digital 5.1. Front focused mostly with surrounds getting some very light ambience. Quality was high with clear dialogue and strong balance to the bass-filled musical score.

Extras include commentary from director Susan Strohman, a lengthy outtake reel (15 minute one), some deleted scenes, and one of those Anatomy of a Scene documentaries.

Good performances given this one some steam, but as an updated version, it doesn’t quite shine as well as the original. Nice for the ensemble work though, good to see a wide group of actors that would usually not be in a movie together working it all out. The DVD from Universal is quite nice, so well worth checking out for any and all fans.
