| | Everyone loves the Beatles. Anyone who doesn't is not worthy. If you hate The Beatles, than your opinions on every other aspect of life become suspect. In fact, they become invalid. Across the Universe is a love story to the Beatles. Some may not enjoy it, but even if you don't dig the movie, it should at least ignite a passion to go download some tunes from the greatest band of all time (no debate on that).
Directed by Julie Taymor, who helmed Titus and made some popular Broadway plays, Across the Universe tells the story of a British dock worker named Jude (Jim Sturges) who travels to America in the 1960's to find his estranged father. Once there, he falls for a girl, of course. Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood) is a sheltered teenager. However, after her brother gets drafted into the Vietnam War, the two become active in the peace movement- basically they turn into true hippies.
All the characters take their names from Beatles songs. And you'll hear all your old favorites again, and will even catch some of their less than popular ones. God, the Beatles were so amazing. Damn you Mark David Chapman! You robbed us of the greatest musical genius of the 20th Century!
Without being just excellent on a musical level, Across the Universe definitely delivers on a visual one. Taymor definitely has an eye that can spot the perfect visuals for a Beatles tune. This movie is incredibly colorful.
Overall, Across the Universe is bound to be an acquired taste. Its not very big on important plot, everything that happens relates to a Beatles song. But its definitely different, and definitely an original. Julie Taymor delivers another interesting piece. Long live Sgt. Pepper. |
